SEO consultant in Arras

For a business in Arras, visibility on Google is decided in a three-line box placed on a map. I work on that local pack, then on the website that takes over when the map is no longer enough.

In Arras, everything starts on the map

Type the name of a trade followed by Arras and look at what Google shows first. Before any website, there is a block of three businesses with their rating, their opening hours and a directions button to Google Maps. That block is called the local pack, and most people stop there. For tradespeople, shopkeepers and independent professionals in Arras, it is the first battleground of local SEO.

That block follows three criteria, and only one of them depends on your website.

Relevance

Does your listing describe exactly what the person is looking for? The primary category carries enormous weight, and many businesses pick one that is too broad when they create their listing.

Distance

Google measures the gap between the searcher and you. It is the criterion nobody can lie about, and the one that protects town-center shops against the big chains on the outskirts.

Prominence

The number of Google reviews, how recent they are, the presence of your name elsewhere on the web and the links pointing to you, grouped under the name of link building. It is the slowest criterion to build and the hardest to catch up on.

The Google Business Profile listing comes before the site

Whether for a shop on the Grand-Place or a company based out near Actiparc, that is almost always where I start. No other optimization offers the same ratio between effort and result.

Categories
One primary category, chosen as close as possible to your real activity, and secondary ones that cover the rest. It is the setting that moves the most people, and it takes ten minutes.
Services and products
Each detailed service becomes one more entry point through which people can find you. Most listings leave this section empty.
Reviews
Setting up a simple way to ask for Google reviews, replying to all of them, and handling negative ones instead of putting up with them. A recent review counts for more than an old one.
Photos
Refreshed, taken on your premises, named properly. A listing with no recent photo looks abandoned.
Consistent contact details
Name, address and phone number identical everywhere your business appears. One old address lingering in a directory is enough to blur the signal.

Then the site takes over

The listing has a clear limit: it answers “plumber Arras” well, and “replacing a heat pump water heater Arras” much less well. Those long-tail keywords are typed less often, but they bring qualified traffic in the strictest sense, from people who already know what they want. And they are not won on the map: they are won with pages, in the classic search results.

In practice, that means one page per service rather than a single “our services” page, texts that answer the questions your customers ask on the phone, and a website fast enough not to lose those arriving from a phone on 4G. That is where organic search takes over from local SEO.

Knowing which of these pages to write, and in what order, means looking at what your customers search for rather than at what you sell. It is the semantic part of the SEO audit, and it saves you from writing ten pages when three would have done.

Between Pas-de-Calais and Nord

I am based in Aubigny-au-Bac, on the border between the two departments. That is far from a detail for a business in Arras: many work on both sides, with customers in Lens and Béthune on one side and in Douai and Cambrai on the other, and their local SEO strategy has to cover that reality instead of stopping at an administrative border.

Providers coming from further away handle this reality poorly, even though it changes how you build the pages of local businesses that serve two departments. I can travel to Arras for a kick-off meeting or a progress review. The rest is done remotely, like almost every SEO mission.

Your questions about local SEO

Why does my competitor show up on the map and not me?

In order of frequency: their primary category matches the query better, they have more recent Google reviews, or their listing is simply more complete than yours. Distance plays a part too, and if you are on the outskirts while they are in the town center, you start with a handicap on searches made from the center.

It can be checked in half an hour. Compare the two listings point by point, and the gap almost always jumps out.

How do you get reviews without buying them?

By asking, at the right moment, with a direct link. Most satisfied customers would gladly leave one, but nobody asks them. A QR code on the counter, a link at the bottom of invoices or a message after the job does most of the work.

Bought reviews get spotted and removed, and a listing can be suspended for it. The risk is not worth it, especially since regularity counts more than volume: five reviews per quarter beat thirty at once followed by nothing.

Do you need an address in Arras to appear on the Arras map?

For the block of three results, yes: real proximity counts a lot, and a business located thirty kilometers away has little chance of appearing for a search made from the center.

If you travel to your customers, the “service-area business” format exists: the address is used for verification and then stays hidden, and you declare your areas. Be careful, video verification has become stricter and requires real proof of professional presence at the declared address.

How long before moving up in the local pack?

Listing settings take effect within a few days to a few weeks, sometimes spectacularly when the primary category was poorly chosen.

Reviews and prominence come from groundwork measured in months. It is the part nobody can speed up artificially, and also the part that lasts.

Is a Google listing enough without a website?

For a shop with walk-in customers, it already brings a lot, and I would rather say so than sell you a website you do not need.

It reaches its limit as soon as your services need explaining, your average order value goes up, or your customers compare before calling. At that point you need pages, and a link from the listing to the site also strengthens the listing itself.

You are not from Arras. Is that a problem?

For the work, no: an SEO audit, a listing adjustment or a technical fix can be done just as well remotely, and I know the area since I live on the edge of Pas-de-Calais.

For your own SEO, however, your roots in Arras are an asset I will help you make the most of. In the algorithm, it is your address that counts; mine plays no part.
