OpenAI has been rolling out GPT-6 in ChatGPT since October 7, 2026: first for the Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans, then from the next day for the Free and Go plans. With Intelligent UI, the model builds each answer with text, charts, buttons or forms, and creates small tools on request, such as a calculator to explore how savings could grow. For questions that need web search, OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant and is better at deciding when to search. Search Engine Journal notes that the announcement does not say how sources are displayed when the answer takes the form of a chart or a tool. For a small business, two points can be checked: the real value of its tool pages and OAI-SearchBot's access to the site.

On October 7, 2026, OpenAI published “GPT-6 and Intelligent UI for everyone”, the announcement of a new model aimed at the more than 1.2 billion people who use ChatGPT each week.1 The change concerns both the form of the answers, which become interfaces, and the web search ChatGPT runs to answer.1 This article goes over what OpenAI announces, what its help pages specify and what it implies for the pages of a small business website, starting with its calculators and simulators.
01Answers built like interfaces
GPT-6 introduces a feature called Intelligent UI in ChatGPT. OpenAI trained it to compose its answers with text, visuals and interactive elements, and to choose for itself how to combine them depending on the question.1
What an answer contains
An answer can include illustrations, buttons, forms, charts and interactive experiences that can be used within the conversation.1 OpenAI gives examples of formats: a side-by-side layout for a comparison, an interactive diagram for an explanation, and a plain text answer when that remains the most useful.1
On the technical side, OpenAI built a library of native components and a compiler that renders the interface as the model generates it, without waiting for the end of the answer.1
Tools created on request
Users can also ask ChatGPT to create a tool for the task at hand. The announcement mentions a calculator to explore how savings could grow, a bill splitter for dinner with friends and a game to play in the conversation.1
Search Engine Journal points out that ChatGPT already offered interactive charts since June and interactive modules on more than 70 math and science topics since March, according to its release notes.2 OpenAI writes that it eventually wants ChatGPT to create more interfaces for its users' everyday needs.1
Who gets GPT-6, and when
The schedule and the models differ depending on the plan.1
| ChatGPT plan | Rollout date | Model used |
|---|---|---|
| Plus, Pro, Business | from October 7, 2026 | GPT-6 Sol |
| Enterprise | from October 7, 2026, depending on admin settings | GPT-6 Sol |
| Free and Go | from October 8, 2026 | GPT-6 Luna |
The update applies to the Chat experience: the models behind Work and Codex do not change.1 According to OpenAI's help page on models, Intelligent UI is coming to the web and to up-to-date apps, from the Instant to the Extra High thinking level, but not at the Pro level or in the older desktop apps for macOS and Windows.3 On the web, a “Layout and visuals” setting reduces the visual elements, without going back to a fully text-based answer.3
02Faster, better-triggered web search
GPT-6 can start answering while it keeps thinking or using its tools, including web search. OpenAI trained it to take the user's waiting time into account and to build its answer in several parts.1
OpenAI's figures
For questions that need web search, OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner, on average, than GPT-5.6 Instant.1 In an internal evaluation of everyday agentic tasks, GPT-6 Extra High began answering in the same amount of time as GPT-5.6 Medium, with a better overall score than GPT-5.6 Extra High.1
These measurements come from OpenAI's internal evaluations. On hard problems, the announcement says GPT-6 addresses the core of the question more often than GPT-5.6, and Search Engine Journal notes that it gives no figure for this point.12
When ChatGPT decides to search
According to OpenAI, GPT-6 is better at deciding when to search and more reliably finds information that supports its answer.1 Its help page on web search specifies that ChatGPT can search automatically when a question benefits from recent information, and that users can also start a search themselves.4
The same page explains that when ChatGPT calls on partner search providers, it generally rewrites the question into one or more targeted queries that it sends to them, and that it may use an approximate location inferred from the IP address for local results, such as restaurants or the weather.4
How a site gets into the results
OpenAI ranks search results based on several factors and guarantees no placement.4 For a site to be eligible, its help page asks site owners to allow the OAI-SearchBot crawler to crawl the site and to check that the host or content delivery network lets through traffic from the IP addresses OpenAI publishes for this crawler.4
The robots.txt file gives its instructions crawler by crawler, and allowing OAI-SearchBot is part of the trade-off between blocking AI crawlers and staying visible to them that a site makes for each one. The second condition set by OpenAI concerns the host: a robots.txt that allows OAI-SearchBot is not enough if the host or the delivery network refuses this crawler's traffic.4
03Tool pages and how sources are displayed
Matt G. Southern, of Search Engine Journal, applies the announcement to sites that rely on tool pages: calculators, simulators, converters.2 Google's page on helpful content, for its part, gives the criteria used to judge these pages.5
Calculators and simulators on the front line
According to Search Engine Journal, two of OpenAI's examples, the savings calculator and the bill splitter, rely on generic data and public calculations.2 The author had observed in August that these tools are the easiest to reproduce for the interfaces Google generates in AI Overviews.2
He believes that calculator and converter pages may also face competition from tools created in ChatGPT, which users request and use without leaving the conversation.2
What Google looks for in a tool page
Google lists calculators, online tools, games and search features among the interactive features that are part of a page's main content.5 Among the criteria its raters apply to this content, originality concerns information that is not already available on other sites, and talent or skill explicitly mentions page tools that work.5
The table turns these criteria into checks on a tool page.
| Google's criterion | Check on a tool page |
|---|---|
| Effort | the calculation and its presentation were designed for the page, going beyond a generic template reused as is |
| Originality | the tool relies on data found nowhere else, for example the company's own prices, lead times or rate scales |
| Talent or skill | the tool works, on desktop as on a phone, and its result can be understood without help |
| Accuracy | the formulas and data are correct and up to date, with extra care when the result can affect visitors' lives or well-being |
Deciding which tool pages to keep, enrich or drop also goes through analyzing the search intent each one answers.
How sources are displayed, an open question
Search Engine Journal notes that the GPT-6 announcement does not say how sources will appear when an answer takes the form of a chart, a comparison or a tool.2
For classic answers, OpenAI's help page states that an answer using web search can include citations, which open the source, and a “Sources” button, when available, which lists the cited sources and other useful links.4 The same page warns that results and citations may be incomplete, outdated or wrong.4
